Curated by Stefano Cecchetto, the new art exhibition in Portogruaro retraces the first fifty years of the Venice Biennale, illustrating how Venice became one of the world’s leading international references for modern and contemporary art.
The exhibition path guides visitors through a period of profound artistic transformation, creating a dialogue between Italian artists and international movements that shaped the art history of the 20th century.
The Three Thematic Sections of the Art Exhibition
The exhibition is divided into three major sections, helping visitors understand the evolution of pictorial languages from the late 19th century to the post-war period.
From New Vedutismo to Venetian Atmospheres (1900–1920)
The first section focuses on Venetian landscape painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, featuring works by Ciardi, Tito, Nono, Milesi and Fragiacomo, alongside artists from the Burano School such as Rossi, Moggioli and Semeghini.
The Biennales Between the 1920s and 1940s
This section highlights a major artistic turning point of the early 20th century. Italian artists engage with European avant-gardes, also thanks to the critical contribution of Margherita Sarfatti. Featured artists include Emma and Beppe Ciardi, Casorati, de Pisis, Sironi and Zoran Music.
Avant-Gardes and New Languages in the Post-War Period
The final section explores the artistic vitality of the post-war years, with movements such as Fronte Nuovo delle Arti and Spatialism. Key figures include Afro, Tancredi, Pizzinato, Vedova, de Chirico and Santomaso.
Around 100 Artworks Telling Half a Century of Art
The exhibition features approximately 100 artworks, arranged in thematic rooms that highlight affinities, differences and experimental approaches across various artistic languages.
The result is a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Italian and international art from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
